Natural Reminders

Suggested Scripture

Romans 1:18-28

Key Verse

For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.

(Romans 1:20, NIV)

While going through a stack of old cards and keepsakes, I found a letter my husband had written me one summer while we were engaged. At the time he wrote it I was hundreds of miles away, enrolled in an intense three-week environmental science course. In the letter he said “Whenever you start to miss me, just look down at those sparklies on your ring and remember how much I love you.”

The “sparklies” in the diamonds of my engagement ring served to remind me of Brad’s promise to marry me. They were a physical reminder of the emotion of love that he felt for me. He had given me the engagement ring as tangible symbol of the covenant we would soon make to one another.

God has given us a similar reminder. Everything he has established in creation is a testament of his existence. In many ways the beauty of the world he has created is a reminder of the covenant he has with us to one day set up a new heaven and new earth. We have no excuse for not recognizing God’s love for us. He has set it up all around us.
